Wash hands with soap\nvigorously before and after handling raw poultry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Follow these steps from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/handwashing\/when-how-handwashing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">CDC\u2019s Handwashing Guide<\/a> to wash your hands correctly every time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wet your\nhands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap and apply\nsoap.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lather\nyour hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs\nof your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scrub\nyour hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d song\nfrom beginning to end twice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rinse\nyour hands well under clean, running water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry your\nhands using a clean towel or air dry them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wash used cutting boards, dishes, utensils and countertops\nwith hot, soapy water after preparing each food item. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: Consider using paper towels to clean kitchen\nsurfaces and dry your hands. Carefully clean all cutting boards, countertops\nand utensils with soap and hot water before and after preparing raw poultry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep raw poultry separate from ready-to-eat foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/2019\/08\/26\/to-wash-or-not-to-wash\/\">Don\u2019t\nrinse your turkey!<\/a> Rinsing your turkey can spread harmful germs and\nbacteria around the kitchen and increases the risk of cross-contamination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cook &#8211; Cook turkey to internal temperature of 165\u00b0F<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"425\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/71e76IGnn1L._SX425_.jpg\" alt=\"food safety meat thermometer\" class=\"wp-image-7085\" style=\"width:296px;height:296px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/71e76IGnn1L._SX425_.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/71e76IGnn1L._SX425_-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/71e76IGnn1L._SX425_-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Use a meat thermometer to verify that your turkey has reached the safest internal temperature of 165\u00b0F. For a whole turkey, the temperature should be checked in at least three places: the innermost part of the thigh, the innermost part of the wing and the thickest part of the breast. If you stuffed your turkey, the innermost part of the stuffing should also reach 165\u00b0F.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When cooking turkey burgers, use an instant-read food thermometer inserted into several parts of the patty \u2013 including the thickest part. Sanitize meat thermometers in-between tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leftover foods or ready-to-eat foods should be heated until they reach 165\u00b0F! According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/food-safety\/safe-food-handling-and-preparation\/food-safety-basics\/leftovers-and-food-safety\">USDA guidelines,<\/a> discard any uneaten food after being left out for more than two hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freeze raw turkey that will not be cooked before the \u201cuse-by\ndate\u201d on the packaging, or within two days of purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/blog\/2016\/11\/18\/how-safely-thaw-turkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Thaw turkey<\/a> in the refrigerator, ideally in a bowl or other dish on the lowest shelf. Never thaw or marinate foods on the counter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once cooked, slice turkey off the bone (you can leave the leg\nand thigh intact), cover and refrigerate promptly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or frozen for 3-4 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Why is food safety important?<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bacteria are naturally present in the environment, and, as a result, raw poultry products may contain bacteria. While foodborne bacteria can\u2019t be seen, tasted or smelled, it can be harmful if ingested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can ensure your turkey is safe to eat through thorough cooking \u2013 including verifying your turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165\u00b0F \u2013 proper storage and careful handling.
